Discuss possible items with which you are familiar among other committe members or friends. Practical items are great but your main goal on the freebees is to spread the word about your orgainization or purpose. Try to find items that will not be tossed away at the first opportunity. If your imprint is on a wrapper that is discarded after removing the contents, it no longer is doing it's job.

Selling items:

In most situations, you have a captive audience and they can't wait to buy the new logo'd items, especially the apparel. You need to be more cautious with this type of purchase. Whoever chooses the merchandise really needs to be in tune with the tastes of the prospective buyer. People are more discerning about what they buy today. They are happy to wear your logo emblazened upon their chest as long as it's stylish NOW.

Be careful about the quantities you buy of dated items. Leftovers of these can become a complete drain on your profitability since recycling them the next year can be dificult.
